Decimal Place Value Chart for Students
Decimals show parts of one whole. The farther a digit is to the right of the decimal point, the smaller its value is.
Key ideas
- Tenths are one digit after the decimal point.
- Hundredths are two digits after the decimal point.
- Thousandths are three digits after the decimal point.
- Zeros can hold places without changing the value, like 0.5 and 0.50.
Decimal Places

What is the value of 8 in 2.84?
Calculation: 8 is in the tenths place, so 8 x 0.1 = 0.8
Answer: 0.8
What is the value of 4 in 2.84?
Calculation: 4 is in the hundredths place, so 4 x 0.01 = 0.04
Answer: 0.04
Which is greater: 0.7 or 0.65?
Calculation: 0.7 = 0.70, and 0.70 is greater than 0.65
Answer: 0.7
Write 3 tenths and 5 hundredths as a decimal.
Calculation: 0.3 + 0.05 = 0.35
