Rounding Numbers Guide for Students
Rounding gives an estimate that is close to the original number. It is helpful when an exact answer is not needed.
Key ideas
- Find the place you are rounding to.
- Look at the digit immediately to the right.
- If the digit is 5 or greater, round up.
- If the digit is 4 or less, keep the rounding digit the same.
Rounding Examples

Practice questions
Round 583 to the nearest ten.
Calculation: The ones digit is 3, so keep the tens digit the same
Answer: 580
Round 583 to the nearest hundred.
Calculation: The tens digit is 8, so round 5 hundreds up to 6 hundreds
Answer: 600
Round 4.76 to the nearest tenth.
Calculation: The hundredths digit is 6, so 4.7 rounds up
Answer: 4.8
Round 9.243 to the nearest hundredth.
Calculation: The thousandths digit is 3, so keep 4 in the hundredths place
Answer: 9.24
